Still Life With Paper
(Birch Contemporary, 2017)
"To achieve understanding it is necessary not to see many things, but to look hard at what you do see." - Giorgio Morandi
This series was originally inspired by The Subway Therapy Project – an installation of Post-Its, placed by commuters to express their feelings about the U.S. election. While initially drawn to the words, I soon became fascinated by the paper they were written on - and the opportunities it provided to tackle fundamental issues of observational painting. Included in this exhibition are the results of these explorations, including a series of studies of paper that has been bent and shaped according to the instructions laid out in an early 20th century art-instruction manual.
